In Celebration Of National Bikini Day 2020

Creative Director & Designer Anna-Maria Sommer shares her favourite picks of the season.
From Bridgette Bardot’s 1953 Cannes Film Festival floral bikini bombshell moment, to the iconic Honey Ryder Bond girl surf scene in 1962, the beloved two-piece bikini has come a long way since its invention by Parisian fashion designer Louis Réard in 1946. The bikini has made waves throughout the fashion world for detailed designs and risqué cuts and is now considered an essential to any modern woman’s summer wardrobe. In celebration of this year’s National Bikini Day we look to designer and creative director of Sommer Swim, Anna Maria Sommer, for her favourite swimwear trends of the season and the bikini styles she’ll be wearing all summer long.

What inspired you to start Sommer Swim?

To be honest it was almost accidental. I started making swim samples for myself to wear - pieces that resonated with my own personal style that could be worn both on holiday in Europe or while lounging by the pool at home. My goal has always been to create pieces that were different and added a level of glamour to the swim market, while still offering comfort and making the wearer feel confident, empowered, and sexy.

What makes Sommer Swim unique to other brands?

I think staying true to our brand identity and visual aesthetic has allowed us to grow while keeping our original followers and day one customers on board. While our brand is evolving, I think the key elements such as shiny Italian lycra, high cut bottoms, classic yet minimalistic cuts have helped shape Sommer Swim to become a recognisable brand in the swimwear industry.

Swimwear trends you’re loving this season?

We are starting to see minimalistic cuts, high waist bottoms, and cheeky designs become part of most bikini collections. While we don’t create for fast moving trends, we see huge potential in repurposing design elements from our past collections and reinventing them into a fresh new look that can be loved for more than one summer.

Must-have pieces from the current collection?

My all-time favourite is the Xena Top and Naomi bottom. I love the versatility these styles bring your summer wardrobe. You can wear the bottoms wrapped around your waist or tied to the side, while the top can be worn three ways and gives you an extra lift when worn as a halter neck. Pair this bikini set with one of our favourite summer cover ups, the Madeira wrap dress in Cinnamon, to take you from beach to bar.

What’s next for Sommer Swim?

We will be introducing a new exciting colour for high summer and are working on our next collection which will be launching later this year. Stay tuned!
