Why the Athens Riviera Deserves More Than a Stopover

Most people treat the Athens Riviera as a footnote. A transit point before the islands, a name on a map they pass through rather than pause at. We took a couple of days of R&R at The ROC Club before heading to the islands. You should too.

The Hotel

Grecotel’s ROC Club sits on a quiet Vouliagmeni side street, steps from the lake and the marina, and describes itself as a Club-Maison. This isn’t a resort with a lobby and a gift shop and three pools ranked by temperature. It’s something more considered: 34 rooms and suites that feel like a private, well edited world.

Dressed in Grecian whites with marble bathrooms, sleek surfaces and natural fabrics, the rooms are airy and uncluttered in a way that feels intentional rather than minimal. Breakfast is taken on the rooftop at the Rocket Bar. The southern Riviera coastline stretches out in every direction, the Saronic Gulf glitters below, and the combination of strong Greek coffee, good food and morning light makes for the kind of slow start that recalibrates your sense of what a day on vacation should feel like.

Come evening, the Rocket Bar shifts register entirely. The same view, now lit by sunset and then by the darkness settling over the water. The menu moves between Greek staples and a short, confident sushi selection, an unexpected combination that works.

The Athens Riviera

The ROC Club is Grecotel’s most intimate property, and Vouliagmeni is exactly the right home for it. This stretch of coastline south of Athens, through Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and beyond, has been the preferred summer escape of Athenians for decades. Not a tourist destination so much as a local institution: pine lined roads winding to small bays, tavernas serving grilled fish at waterfront tables, evenings that stretch long and warm without anyone hurrying them along.

Vouliagmeni has its own rhythm. The lake, the marina, the beaches, the restaurants, everything is here, within walking distance or a short drive along the coast.

Where to Eat & What to Do

Dinner at the Rocket Bar

Before looking elsewhere, look up. Greek and sushi, cocktails and coastline views. Worth at least one evening, possibly two. Book ahead even as a hotel guest.

Ithaki Restaurant

The essential off property dinner. Ithaki sits on the Riviera with an outdoor terrace facing the water. Request to be seated outside and come early enough to catch the sunset. The food is Greek and Japanese Fusion.

Astir Beach

One of the most storied beach clubs on the Riviera, set within the historic Astir Palace grounds. Book sunbeds and a lunch table, arrive early. Long, well organised, clear water, a scene that manages to feel glamorous without performing.

Krabo Beach

The more intimate alternative. Smaller, lower key, same beautiful water, different tempo. Book ahead for sunbeds and lunch, arrive around noon, and settle into the Riviera rhythm.

Vouliagmeni Lake

A short walk from the hotel and unlike anything else in the area. The thermal lake sits between limestone rock and pine trees, fed by underground springs that keep it warm year round. The water is brackish and mineral rich. It feels different from any sea you’ve swum in. Go in the morning before the heat peaks or late afternoon when the light softens.

Your Three Nights at The ROC Club

Night One: Arrive and Settle

Check in, take the room in, watch the boats. Dinner at the Roc Veranda. Mediterranean, al fresco, exactly right for a first evening.

Day Two: The Hotel and the Beach

Rooftop breakfast, unhurried. Pool morning at the Roc Pool carved into the lake rocks, private terrace, cold drink from the bar, no agenda. Lunch at the Roc Veranda before heading to Astir Beach or Krabo for the afternoon. Book sunbeds in advance. Back to the hotel for golden hour, then dinner at Ithaki. Don't skip the desserts.

Day Three: The Lake and the Rooftop

Walk to Vouliagmeni Lake before the heat peaks. An hour in the thermal waters, then back to the Roc Pool for the afternoon. Tonight, dinner at the Rocket Bar. The view at sunset, the cocktails after, the Riviera below.

Day Four: Departure

One final rooftop breakfast. One last swim. Then the islands, or home, or wherever comes next, with the quiet certainty that you made the right call stopping here first.

What to Pack

The riviera feels more polished than the islands, more relaxed than the city. Greece vacation outfits here need to move between pool terrace, beach club, rooftop dinner, and waterfront restaurant without requiring a rethink at each stop.
